![]() ![]() The Starfire shared its basic shell with other Oldsmobile models, but a unique brushed-aluminum strip adorning the car’s flanks, special wheel covers and other exclusive trim distinguished it from its siblings. The interior featured bucket seats, a center console, and a then-cutting edge console mounted shifter. Oldsmobile added a two-door hardtop Starfire for 1962, with a starting price of $4,131. Segment many say was ushered in by the upsized 1958 Ford Thunderbird. Introduced as convertible-only model for 1961, and borrowing a name used on the high-end Oldsmobile models of the 1950s, the options-laden Starfire became the brand’s foray into the expanding personal luxury “She documented every trip in the car gas mileage, service costs, car washes, everything. The black roof color accentuated the faux convertible Potvin bought the Starfire brand-new, custom-ordering the color combination, which she had previously specified on a 1955 Oldsmobile hardtop she’d owned. The Starfire was equipped with a 345 horsepower 394 cubic-inch V-8 and automatic transmission. Knox, whose 1966 Cadillac Fleetwood Sixty Special is featured in this week’s Sunday Automobiles section. “She was a wonderful lady, and she really loved that car,” said Mr. Potvin’s history with the Starfire, made it his mission to preserve the big coupe, which had been sitting unused in a garage since 1992. Potvin’s granddaughter, Julia Knox, and her then-husband Ray, had moved her from Warrensburg, N.Y., to a nursing facility in Glens Falls. Starfire, which she drove until the age of 90.” Potvin was well known in the Glens Falls area for the immaculate turquoise and black 1962 Oldsmobile 22, 2005, obituary for Edna Potvin in The Glens Falls Post-Star included a note about her car: “Mrs. The 1962 Starfire was distinguished from other Oldsmobile models by its unique aluminum trim, chrome engine dressing, and space age interior. ![]()
